As the only patient safety organization (PSO) in the nation dedicated exclusively to children’s hospitals, the Child Health PSO® offers unique opportunities to explore harm in pediatric settings. Within a federally protected environment, member hospitals confidentially share their safety cases, discuss solutions, and work together to address the most pressing challenges they face.

In 2024, with the dedicated work of nearly 60 member hospitals, we celebrated several learning and development improvements to advance patient safety:

  • Timely guidance in uncertain times. In response to several national proposals affecting patient safety, we created a comprehensive guide and hosted a panel discussion with key stakeholders on crucial issues. We are committed to providing timely guidance as the safety landscape undergoes change and uncertainty.
  • Industry leadership. Our pilot study on diagnostic safety won Best Abstract for Applied Innovation at the 2024 Diagnostic Excellence Conference. We also presented at EPIC’s Kid Share roundtable on a practical framework for capturing health IT data.
  • Enhanced data tracking and sharing. Our new vendor platform helps improve data collection, enrich member resources, improve safety analysis, empower safety improvements, and strengthen learning opportunities. Members can now access a deep and diverse repository of deidentified action plans that outline a hospital’s specific actions to prevent a safety event from recurring.
  • Record learning engagement. This year saw the highest levels of member engagement, reaching a record 74% of hospitals being engaged. High engagement in the PSO creates a relevant and sustainable learning safety network to achieve our global aim of eliminating preventable pediatric harm.

As we look ahead, sparing children from serious preventable harm will continue to drive our shared purpose.
