International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes can be used to identify cases of physical child abuse among hospitalized children. Previous validation studies using ICD-9-CM codes established a rubric whereby hospitalizations qualified as cases of physical abuse if they had both a code for abuse or assault and a code for an injury, anoxic brain injury or retinal hemorrhages. ICD-9-CM codes did not allow for a declaration of diagnostic certainty. Among other changes, ICD-10 codes now allow for new designations for suspected and confirmed abuse.
