Why Every Leader Needs Confidence

“One leadership trait I always try to keep at the forefront is confidence,” said Adam M. Campbell, PhD, senior vice president and chief quality and patient safety officer at Children’s Hospital at Erlanger. Health care leaders can project confidence in several ways:

  • Do not be afraid to take intelligent risks. The status quo in a fast-moving environment is not productive.
  • Have confidence in those around you. Know that you are surrounded by colleagues who share your passion.
  • Maintain confidence in the future. This guards against whining, complaining, and making excuses — three actions that should never come from a leader.

“A steady, optimistic confidence from a leader helps propagate a solid patient-first culture,” Campbell said.
